Early on Thursday, analysts at Jefferies upgraded Intel Corporation (INTC), commenting that they believe the semiconductor and microprocessor manufacturer “offers one of the best alpha generation opportunities” in its sector.
Jefferies upgraded INTC from “Hold” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $30, up from the previous target of $27. This new price target suggests a 33% upside to the stock’s Thursday closing price of $22.63.
Mark Lipacis, an analyst at Jefferies, said, “We believe INTC offers one of the best alpha generation opportunities in semis: 1) it is finally focusing its manufacturing leadership to make MPUs that are lower power, higher performance and cheaper than competitive solutions. This new focus should translate to share gains in sub-$500 tablets, 2-in-1 PCs and handsets. 2) Consensus incorrectly assumes INTC’s x86 MPUs have an inherent disadvantage vs ARM, and its 3yr, $60b investment nets to zero advantage.”

Margins matter. The more Quality Distribution (Nasdaq: QLTY ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Quality Distribution's competitive position could be.

Bullish options trading in Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) reached the highest level since November prior to the announcement of its takeover by AT&T Inc. (T)
- [By Rich Smith]
Suddenly, nobody hates Leap Wireless anymore
AT&T's (NYSE: T ) announcement late Friday, that it plans to buy mobile rival Leap Wireless (NASDAQ: LEAP ) for $15 a share, spurred a radical rethink among analysts this morning. As Monday dawned, no fewer than five separate analysthouses upgraded their ratings on Leap, with BTIG, Baird, BMO, and J.P. Morgan all upgrading the shares to various flavors of "neutral," and Barclays suggesting investors actually "overweight" the stock. - [By Dan Caplinger]
On the downside, Verizon (NYSE: VZ ) has fallen almost 1% after rival AT&T (NYSE: T ) agreed to purchase Leap Wireless (NASDAQ: LEAP ) in a $1.2 billion deal that would pay Leap investors $15 per share. Leap has more than doubled to surpass that $15 level, suggesting that investors expect Verizon or another rival bidder to try to make a play for the prepaid-mobile company. Given the huge demand for wireless spectrum that has driven several past deals within the industry, Verizon must not take its status as the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier for granted. Yet with shares of other spectrum-holding companies also on the rise, it looks as though AT&T just raised the bar in its own quest to retain its No. 2 status and find ways to grow in the increasingly saturated U.S. market. Watch closely to see whether any other bidders emerge for Leap in the days to come.
