News Corp (NASDAQ: FOX ) has picked a familiar-sounding appellation for the global media and entertainment assets it plans to spin off into a separate entity. The company is to be known as 21st Century Fox, a name strongly reminiscent of its long-standing film studio Twentieth Century Fox, located in Los Angeles.
Somewhat confusingly, the studio and News Corp's small-screen production unit Twentieth Century Fox Television will both be folded into 21st Century Fox. Other entities under that corporate umbrella will include Fox News Channel, the FX cable network, and National Geographic Channel.
News Corp first proposed the separation of its current business into two separate firms in the summer of 2012. One will contain its global media and entertainment units, and the other will operate its newspapers and information services, among various other businesses. The move is pending final shareholder assent and approval from the appropriate regulatory bodies.

FBR & Co.‘sWilliam Bird, who follows the shares of old media dinosaursGannett (GCI), Meredith(MDP),News(NWSA), andThe New York Times(NYT), today offers the findings of a survey of 2,041 adults in the U.S. from March 12th to March 17th.
Bird has an Outperform rating on shares of Gannett, and Market Perform ratings on the other three names.
The upshot of the survey is that a third of young readers don’t read print papers, and are more and more flocking to online news outlets.
The survey, conducted with the help of Clear Voice Research LLC, suggests to Bird a “steady structural pressure on print, a tip of the spear demographic problem for print circulation, and slow magazine tablet adoption negative as tablets offer a better business model for magazines.”
More specifically, there is “value destruction” as more and more people trade from print to digital editioins of publications:
The survey suggests that structural pressure on consumer newspaper readership is a touch abovethat of magazines. Over the next year, print newspaper usage is expected to decline a net 5% (i.e.,6% expect to use more versus 11% who expect to use less). A total of 11% of respondents said they plan to use print newspapers less and 10% said they plan to use print magazines less. This was exactly offset by the percentage of respondents who said theyplan to consume online newspapers more (11%) and those who plan to consume online magazinesmore (10%). With $1 of print ad spend translating to $0.25 in digital, these results are supportive of continued print-to-digital value destruction.
Younger readers tend to be more inclined to dump print, says FBR:
According to our survey, intended print newspaper subscription cancellations total 9.8% over the next 12 months. Notable is that plans to cancel skew heavily toward the below 35 year old demographic. The 18 to 34 demographic reflects

The cable-television M&A chatter is making its rounds again, this time with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR), Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC), and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) pegged as the three points of the ever-changing parties of a never-ending love triangle. The buzz is, well, was that CHTR was first in line to nab TWC. Today, however, it's starting to look like CMCSA is more seriously interested in Time Warner Cable than first thought. TWC shares jumped on the doubly-good news that it may well become the prize in a bidding war between Charter Communications and Comcast Corporation. Meanwhile, CMCSA shares have jumped (albeit not quite as firmly) on the prospect of its ownership of TWC. What's interesting - and perhaps telling - is the fact that not only have CHTR shares not soared in the wake of what would normally be viewed as good news, but Charter shares have actually stumbled heading into the possible bidding war. Might this be an omen of what's actually in store for Charter Communications?

SAN FRANCISCO -- Netflix's videos are streaming through Comcast's Internet service at their highest speeds in 17 months, thanks to a recent deal that bought Netflix a more direct connection to Comcast's (CMCSA) network. The data released Monday by Netflix (NFLX) may become another flash point in a debate about whether the Federal Communications Commission should draw up new rules to ensure that all online content providers are treated the same by Internet service providers. The equal-treatment doctrine, known as Net neutrality, has become a thornier topic since January when a federal appeals court overturned the FCC's regulations on the issue. Net neutrality is also drawing more attention as Comcast tries to gain approval of its proposed $45 billion purchase of Time Warner Cable (TWC), another large Internet service provider. As the world's largest Internet video subscription service, Netflix has long supported Net neutrality as a way to prevent online service providers from giving better treatment to websites willing to pay additional fees for the privilege. Nevertheless, Netflix agreed in mid-February to pay an undisclosed sum to Comcast Corp. to create a new avenue for its videos to reach Comcast's service. Netflix previously had been paying third-party vendors such as Cogent Communications Group (CCOI) and Akamai Technologies (AKAM) to deliver its content to Comcast. Some analysts suspect Netflix may be saving money by paying Comcast directly instead of the vendors, but the specifics remain unknown as part of a confidentiality agreement. The arrangement clearly seems to paying off for Netflix subscribers who are among the nearly 21 million households and businesses that rely on Comcast's high-speed Internet service to watch movies and television shows. Comcast delivered Netflix video at an average rate of 2.5 megabits per second during March. That was a 66 percent increase from a recent low of 1.51 megabits per second in January. The March perform

2. DirecTV spikes after AT&T acquisition rumors
According to company insiders that leaked rumors to The Wall Street Journal, communications giantAT&T (NYSE: T ) is addingDirecTV (NASDAQ: DTV ) to its family plan. The deal could be announced in as soon as two weeks.
Like any wise subject of rumors, both companies declined to comment publicly. But if you're trying to trade stocksbased on official announcementsonly, then you're going to get burned. Savvy traders make moves on rumors like these to snatch the stock at a cheaper price before the rest hear about the big news. DTV is trading up over 5% since the article hit the wire.
AT&T needs video to keep profiting off whatpeople are demanding, and DirecTV needs better broadband Internet infrastructure. So it's a perfect match. The big question is what combination of debt and new stockAT&T needs to issue to raise the necessary cash. Reports say that the deal could value DirecTV at $50 billion, so DTV's stock price is rising in anticipation of the big buyout for shareholders. - [By Jayson Derrick]

www.cbs.com"NCIS: New Orleans" extends the franchise for CBS. The fall season has kicked off, so it's time to look at the overall television market and the four companies that have the most at stake. Racing to Cash In On the Back End The month of May wasn't that merry for many broadcasters as upfront ad sales didn't go as well as expected. Think of the upfronts as a sales conference in which networks pitch 30-second spots to buyers, who commit money up front for the right to run their ads during commercial breaks. The more popular the show, the pricier the buy. Most networks managed meager price hikes this time around, leading analysts to speculate that buyers are shifting dollars to on-demand platforms such as YouTube and Hulu. "You're definitely seeing more compelling growth in advertising spending on new media platforms, digital platforms, than you are on the traditional. I don't think, though, that it's matched dollar for dollar in the sense that I don't think all the money that's flowed away from broadcast in the upfront necessarily flowed directly into new digital platforms," Disney (DIS) chief executive Bob Iger said during the most recent earnings conference call. Twenty-First Century Fox (FOXA) President Chase Carey downplayed the digital networks in a call with analysts. He also said that Fox could see substantial upside in the "scatter" market, where unclaimed spots are sold. Highly rated shows can sometimes command a huge premium late in the season, as "Breaking Bad" did last year for AMC Networks (AMCX). Networks Making Big Bets Carey's correct about the potential upside, but for broadcasters, the environment is also about as dangerous as it's ever been. Here's a closer look at the four networks with the most on the line. 1. CBS (CBS) Is there a better positioned network than CBS? Not by my tally. "The Big Bang Theory" was TV's highest-rated scripted show last season, with 19.9 million viewers. "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" also broke int

www.fox.com"Gotham" stars Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon, a mentor to Bruce Wayne. Everyone's favorite troubled superhero, Batman, has come to the aid of a great many people over the course of his 75-year existence. Now, in the form of the new prequel series, "Gotham," he's battling to save an entire network: Twenty-First Century Fox's (FOX) Fox Broadcasting. Fox is one of the four powerful incumbent broadcast television networks. However, like its peers -- Disney's (DIS) ABC, Comcast's (CMCSA) NBC, and CBS (CBS) -- it's fighting against an ever-growing slate of shows from cable networks and streaming services such as Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon.com (AMZN). Unlike its fellow incumbents, however, Fox isn't doing brilliantly against the rising competition. Fallen 'Idol' Fox needs a heroic boost help because its big hits over the last few years are losing viewers, while its more recent offerings haven't scaled the heights of popularity. For years, the network's money show was "American Idol," which became part of the cultural zeitgeist following its debut at the beginning of this century. But the most recent season finale of the singing competition attracted only 10 million viewers. The finale two seasons ago drew twice that number, while Idol's record audience (for the season two finale) topped over 38 million. In contrast to CBS, NBC and ABC, Fox's audience shrank on a year-over-year basis in the second week of the fall TV season. Its viewership numbers for that week declined by a steep 29 percent. For example, a pair of new Fox offerings -- the sitcom "Mulaney" and reality show "Utopia" -- barely topped 2 million viewers. Meanwhile, the sophomore season of cop comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" snared just over 4.5 million viewers in its latest airing. That didn't come close to its non-sports competition. The one-hour dramas "Madam Secretary" on CBS and ABC's "Once Upon a Time" reached 11.5 million and 7.7 million sets of eyeballs, respectively. Saving the Day? So
